How to Identify, Treat, and Prevent Crabgrass in Central Ohio

Crabgrass is an annual weed that germinates every spring when soil temperatures reach about 55 degrees. In Central Ohio, that usually happens in late April or early May. It spreads aggressively through the summer, produces thousands of seeds before the first frost kills it, and those seeds sit in the soil waiting to start the cycle again next spring.
Prevention Is the Real Solution
A pre-emergent herbicide applied in early spring creates a chemical barrier that kills crabgrass seedlings as they try to emerge. Timing is everything. In the Circleville, Columbus, and Lancaster areas, the typical window is mid-March through mid-April.
The Long-Term Fix: A Thick, Healthy Lawn
The best defense against crabgrass is a thick, well-maintained lawn. Mow at 3 to 3.5 inches, water deeply but infrequently, aerate and overseed in the fall, and apply pre-emergent every spring. Lawn Harmony can advise on weed control strategies specific to your property.
