Leaf Removal in Circleville and Central Ohio — Why It Matters More Than You Think

Every fall, the same thing happens across Central Ohio: leaves pile up, the weekends get cold, and clearing them off the lawn gets pushed to "next weekend" until suddenly it's December and there's a frozen layer of matted leaves under the first snow. By spring, the damage is already done. Here's what actually happens to your lawn when leaves sit all winter — and how to prevent it.

What Leaf Buildup Does to Your Ohio Lawn
Smothering and Light Deprivation
Grass doesn't fully go dormant when it looks brown in winter. The root system is still alive and the grass blades, while not actively growing, still need light and gas exchange. A thick mat of wet leaves completely blocks light and restricts airflow, creating the anaerobic conditions that lead to turf death.
In Central Ohio's freeze-thaw winter cycles, wet leaves pressed against the turf surface through repeated freezing and thawing create conditions that kill grass that would otherwise have survived winter just fine. The damage shows up as irregular dead patches in spring that don't green up with the rest of the lawn.
Snow Mold and Fungal Disease
Snow mold is a fungal disease that develops under snow cover on lawns with excessive organic material on the surface — including leaf litter. By the time the snow melts in February and March, you may find large circular or irregular patches of matted, gray or pink-tinged grass. This is snow mold.
Severe snow mold takes weeks to recover from and in bad cases can require overseeding in spring. Prevention is simple: remove the leaves before they get matted down and covered by snow.
Pest Habitat
A thick layer of decomposing leaves provides overwintering habitat for insects, grubs, voles, and other pests. Voles in particular tunnel through leaf litter on the lawn surface, leaving meandering trails of dead grass that look alarming in early spring. They generally don't cause long-term turf damage, but the evidence of their winter activity is unsightly and the tunnels take time to recover.

When to Do Leaf Removal in Central Ohio
The goal is to keep leaves from matting down and staying wet through multiple freeze cycles. In practice, this usually means two passes in Central Ohio:
Mid to late October: Clear the bulk of early leaf drop. Many trees in Circleville, Columbus, and Lancaster drop most of their leaves before Halloween. Don't wait for 100% leaf drop.
Early to mid-November: A second pass after the majority of remaining leaves have fallen. This is especially important for properties with oak trees, which hold their leaves later than most.
A single cleanup in late November, after everything has already matted down through a few rain events and a cold snap, is significantly more work and less effective than two timely passes.
Mulching vs. Removing Leaves
For light leaf coverage — a single thin layer from a few trees — mowing over the leaves with a mulching deck and shredding them into the lawn is a legitimate option. Finely shredded leaf material breaks down quickly and adds organic matter to the soil. The rule of thumb: if you can still see most of the grass blades after mulching, you're in good shape.
For moderate to heavy coverage — more than one thin layer, thick piles, or leaves from many mature trees — mulching into the lawn isn't sufficient. The shredded material accumulates faster than it breaks down and creates its own smothering layer. These properties need full removal.
