Spring Lawn Care Checklist for Columbus Ohio Homeowners [2026]

Spring in Columbus, Ohio doesn't wait for you to be ready. Somewhere between late February and mid-April, the lawn comes back to life — and what you do (or don't do) in those first few weeks sets the tone for the entire mowing season.

This checklist covers everything a Central Ohio homeowner should do in spring, in the right order. Work through it from top to bottom and you'll start the season ahead of your neighbors.

Before Anything Else: Walk the Property

Before you touch a piece of equipment, walk the entire lawn slowly. You're looking for:

  • Areas of bare or thin turf that need overseeding

  • Patches that stayed wet all winter — possible drainage issues

  • Thatch buildup (matted, spongy layer between the grass and soil)

  • Damage near driveways or curbs from salt or snowplow blades

  • Low spots that collected standing water

Make notes. These are your problem areas for the season. Catching them in March means you can address them before the growing season is underway — not in July when it's too late to do anything about it.

March: Cleanup and Prep

Spring Cleanup

This comes before anything else. Every stick, every matted pile of leaves, every dead plant stalk from last fall — it all needs to come off the lawn before the season starts. Matted organic material left on the turf blocks sunlight, traps moisture, and creates the perfect conditions for snow mold and other fungal diseases.

For beds: cut back ornamental grasses to the ground, remove dead perennial stalks, and clear out any debris that accumulated over winter. Beds cleaned now are ready for mulch in April and look sharp immediately.

Equipment Prep

Sharpen your mower blade. Change the oil if you didn't do it at the end of last season. Check your string trimmer line. A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it cleanly, leaving ragged brown tips that look bad and invite disease. This is the single most skipped step in home lawn care and one of the most impactful.

Early April: First Active Steps

Pre-Emergent Weed Control

This is the most time-sensitive item on the entire list. Pre-emergent herbicide needs to be applied before soil temperatures hit 55°F at a 2-inch depth — this is the threshold at which crabgrass seeds germinate. In Columbus and Central Ohio, that window is typically late March to mid-April.

Miss this window by even a week and pre-emergent becomes ineffective. Crabgrass that's already germinated won't be stopped by a pre-emergent — you'd need a post-emergent product, which is less effective and harder on the lawn.

If you're on a lawn care program with a company, make sure they're applying this. If you're DIYing it, watch the 10-day forecast and soil temps closely.

First Mow

Hold off on the first mow until the soil firms up and the grass reaches 3.5 to 4 inches. Mowing on soft, saturated soil leaves ruts. Mowing too short on new spring growth stresses the root system. Set the deck high — 3 to 3.5 inches for most Ohio grass types — and don't bag the clippings. Let them break down and return nitrogen naturally.

Light Fertilization

A slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer in early to mid-April feeds the root system as it wakes up. Avoid fast-release nitrogen products early in the season — they push too much top growth too fast, which means more mowing and a less resilient root system. Save the heavier feeding for late spring when the lawn is fully active.

Mid to Late April: Fill in the Gaps

Overseeding Bare and Thin Areas

Scratch up bare spots with a hand rake or dethatching rake to expose the soil. Apply a quality seed blend matched to your existing grass type — in Central Ohio, that's usually a turf-type tall fescue blend with some Kentucky bluegrass. Seed-to-soil contact is critical for germination. Press it in with your foot or a roller, keep it moist until it establishes.

Don't apply pre-emergent to any area you've overseeded — pre-emergent stops all seed germination, including the grass seed you just put down.

Mulching

Fresh mulch in planting beds does three things: suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, and makes the whole property look finished. Apply 2 to 3 inches of hardwood mulch in all beds. Don't pile it against the base of trees or shrubs (called 'volcano mulching') — it traps moisture and causes rot.

Edging

Clean edges along driveways, sidewalks, and garden beds transform the way a lawn looks. Over winter, grass creeps into edges and the lines get blurry. Re-edging in late April resets everything and makes even a mediocre lawn look well-maintained.

May: Establish Your Routine

By May, the lawn is fully active and your maintenance routine should be locked in. In Columbus and Central Ohio during peak growing season, most lawns need weekly mowing. Going bi-weekly during May and June typically means you're removing more than one-third of the blade per cut — which stresses the grass and leaves behind a rough-looking lawn.

May is also when to watch for:

  • Grub damage from last fall — look for sections of turf that pull up easily, like loose carpet

  • Fungal issues — brown patches, powdery coatings, or irregular-shaped dead zones

  • Areas that didn't fill in from April overseeding — these need a second round

  • Nuisance weeds in beds and lawn edges
